We make decisions based on our emotions and attitudes. Research has shown that we can identify common traits in people. Identifying our personality traits offers several advantages:
- Self-Awareness: It helps you understand your behavior, strengths, and weaknesses.
- Personal Growth: It provides insights to guide your personal development.
- Improved Relationships: Knowing your personality type can enhance communication and empathy with others by recognizing different perspectives.
- Career Guidance: It can help align your strengths with suitable career paths or roles.
- Decision-Making: The more conscious we are of our decisions, the better choices we make in life.
An example for myself, a personality test highlighted the need to be more authentic, and less agreeable at times.

The Big Five Personality Traits (OCEAN)
OCEAN, known as ‘The Big Five,’ is a tool for grouping people into typical personalities. For example, someone with the Conscientiousness trait is more likely to be described as "always organized" rather than "unprepared."
I tested myself with many different personality tests, Myres Briggs being one of the most popular. As a professional visual communicator, I've preferred the OCEAN model for many years. Years of psychology research and modern statistical tools have confirmed OCEAN is one of the best models for personality predictions.
Five typical personalities
- Openness to Experience: Imaginative and curious vs. consistent and cautious.
- Conscientiousness: Industrious and organized vs. easygoing and careless.
- Extraversion: Enthusiastic and energetic vs. solitary and reserved.
- Agreeableness: Polite and compassionate vs. skeptical and judgmental.
- Neuroticism: Sensitive and nervous vs. composed and optimistic.
Advertisers use OCEAN to target messaging and manipulate people to buy what they don't need. It works very well for them!
OCEAN asks more challenging questions about traits like neuroticism. It can be less tolerable than other tests because it's not designed to make us feel better about ourselves. The idea is to understand yourself better.
Some caution is required as OCEAN is not deterministic and doesn’t consider cross-cultural demographics. It’s a simplification but a quick way to get reasonably accurate behavioral insights about people.
