STOPP Activity

The STOPP technique is a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) tool designed to help individuals manage their emotional responses by introducing a mindful pause between a trigger and their reaction.

STOPP Anxiety - Quick Worksheet & Guide

You can apply the STOPP process to your negative thoughts. It's easy to react automatically to a situation without thinking. However, that automatic reaction is often not the best or most helpful one, and it can make you feel worse. STOPP is a process for challenging thoughts and anxiety.

The acronym STOPP stands for:

  1. Stop: Interrupt the automatic reaction by pausing momentarily. This halt creates a space between the stimulus and your response, allowing for deliberate action rather than impulsive reaction.
  2. Take a Breath: Engage in deep, mindful breathing to center yourself. Focusing on your breath helps calm the mind and body, reducing immediate emotional intensity.
  3. Observe: Examine your current thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and surroundings. This step involves recognizing what you're experiencing internally and externally without judgment.
  4. Pull Back: Gain perspective by challenging your initial interpretations. Ask yourself whether your thoughts are facts or opinions and consider alternative viewpoints. This step helps in distancing from automatic negative thoughts.
  5. Practice What Works: Choose the most constructive action in response to the situation. This may involve problem-solving, seeking support, or practicing acceptance. The focus is on proceeding in a way that aligns with your values and long-term well-being.

Regular practice of the STOPP technique can enhance emotional regulation and lead to more mindful, intentional responses in challenging situations
